Biographical Information[edit]

John Sheridan was an Irish-born sports writer who covered a number of sports, most notably baseball and wrote a column for The Sporting News called "Back of Home Plate." He was highly acclaimed for his writing and in 1921, he was promoted to chairman of the Missouri Committee on Public Utility Information. During his time in that position, Sheridan was horrified to have discovered a number of illegal activities and scandals going on and resigned from his position. He began suffering from nervous breakdowns and was sent to the the Alexian Brothers Hospital (the same hospital where Harry East killed himself in 1905) where he hanged himself with a tie from his bathrobe.
