Biographical Information[edit]
Joe Urso has been the head baseball coach at the University of Tampa since 2001. In his first year at the helm, the team won a then school-record 49 games. He has brought the team to the Division II College World Series 8 times and won 3 national titles. The Spartans have also won 10 Sunshine State Conference titles under Urso.
A second baseman, Urso played baseball at UT, graduating in 1992. He was selected by the California Angels in the 49th round of the 1992 amateur draft and played in their organization for four years. After his playing career ended, he was a coach for the Boise Hawks in 1997 and Lake Elsinore Storm in 1198 and managed the Butte Copper Kings in 1999 and 2000.
He is the brother of minor league pitcher Sal Urso.
