Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Joe Torres allowed 4 hits and two walks but only one earned run for the US when they won the 1998 World Youth Championship. He was 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA in the 1999 World Junior Championship, leading the Gold Medal winners in both victories and strikeouts (10). He was selected by the Anaheim Angels in the first round of the 2000 amateur draft. He pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings for Puerto Rico in the 2011 Baseball World Cup. During the 2011 Pan American Games, he pitched 2/3 shutout innings over two games.
He was suspended for 50 games for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program on February 21, 2012, having tested positive for amphetamines.
Torres became a pitching coach with the AZL Indians in 2017, Lake County Captains in 2018, and Lynchburg Hillcats in 2019. In 2022, he was promoted to assistant pitching coach of the Cleveland Guardians.
