Biographical Information[edit]

In 1989, relief pitcher Joe Sambito played for the St. Petersburg Pelicans of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He saved 7 games for the club.

He was one of the early LOOGY's when he pitched for the Boston Red Sox in the second half of 1986 and in 1987. Prior to that, he had been an ace fireman with the Houston Astros until his career was almost ended by an arm injury in 1982. He managed to come back to be a key member of the Red Sox bullpen during their pennant-winning 1986 season, although his high 4.84 ERA meant that manager John McNamara had little confidence in him by the time Boston reached the 1986 World Series.

After his retirement Sambito became a player agent with clients including Morgan Ensberg and Ryan Klesko at the Independent Sports and Entertainment agency. he was fired early in 2018 and in turn sued the company for wrongful termination.
