Biographical Information[edit]
Joe Russo was the All-Tournament shortstop in the 1966 College World Series when St. John's University placed 4th. He was the coach at Christ the King Regional High School in 1966-1969 and assistant coach at St. John's in 1970-1973.
Russo was then was head coach of St. John's from 1974-1995, going 612-310. He coached Frank Viola, C.J. Nitkowski, Rich Aurilia, Wayne Rosenthal and John Franco in college and guided the team to appearances in the 1978 College World Series and 1980 College World Series. He took St. John's baseball team to the 1995 Pan American Games as the USA representative. He also had coached for Team USA when they won Bronze in the 1973 Intercontinental Cup.
