Biographical Information[edit]
Joe Mack was the regular first baseman for most of the first half of the 1945 season for the Boston Braves. From April 17th to July 4th, he got in 66 games, with 260 at-bats. He was a 33-year-old rookie in his only major league season, having been acquired by the Braves from the St. Louis Cardinals during the off-season between 1944 and 1945.
Starting on July 7th, the Braves started using Vince Shupe, a 23-year-old rookie, at first base. Vince was in 78 games during the rest of the season, and then never played at the major league level again. For his part, Mack was sent down to the minors, playing the second half of the year with the Indianapolis Indians, for whom he hit .333 in 80 games.
Mack also played for the 1941 Newark Bears who won 100 games. His minor league career stretched from 1935 to 1951. Among the highlights, he hit .337 for Waterloo in 1937 and drove in 102 runs for Columbus in 1944. He played for 17 different teams in his career.
