Biographical Information[edit]

Joaquin Velez was the youngest player on the Peruvian national team in the 2022 Bolivarian Games. The 18-year-old was the team's youngest player. In their first game, he replaced Alonso Tenya in right field in a loss to the Dominican national team. His first at-bat came the next day, pinch-hitting for Yun Contreras and being retired by Colombia's Luis Arrieta. He started in center and batted second in their third game, a historic upset win over Venezuela in which Velez played a fine role. His first-inning single off Gabriel Acosta scored Rider Zevallos to close it to 2-1. His fifth-inning single off Acosta chased the starter; he would score to make it 3-2. Venezuela won, 5-4, for their first win ever against Venezuela in an international tournament. Velez hit .364/.417/.364 with two runs and two RBI in six games and handled 11 chances error-free in the Games. Only Daniel Liu had more runs for Peru, only Zevallos and Liu had more hits and only Zevallos and Daniel Shimura had more RBI. He was second to Zevallos in average for Peru. Not bad for their youngest player! [1]
