Biographical Information

Jimmy Walsh was one of the last Irish-born players to come to the major leagues. He played six years in the bigs, with almost equal amounts in the three outfield positions: 169 games in center, 165 in right and 162 in left field. He also occasionally played in the infield.

Walsh was with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1912 and 1913 before playing half a season with the New York Yankees in 1914. In June 1914, he was traded back to the A's, where he stayed until September 1916. He finished out his major league career with the Boston Red Sox during the time of Babe Ruth the pitcher.

He started two games of the 1914 World Series, batting sixth in the order. In the 1916 World Series, he came into Game 2 as a pinch-hitter and when the game turned out to be an extra-inning one, he got three at-bats. Babe Ruth ended up pitching all 14 innings and notching the win.

His minor league playing career ran from 1907 to 1931. He played for the Baltimore Orioles when they were in the Eastern League and continued with the team in the International League. After his major league days and service in the United States Navy during World War I, he came back to the International League to play from 1920 to 1929. In 1958 he was elected to the International League Hall of Fame.

He managed the Newark Bears in 1921 and also hit .360. With the Buffalo Bisons in 1926, he hit .388.

Notable Achievements

• Won two World Series with the Philadelphia Athletics (1913 - he did not play in the World Series) and the Boston Red Sox (1916).
