Biographical Information

"He was a left-handed, hard-hitting batsman, and, being remarkably fleet of foot, was often credited with home runs." - from Jimmy Hallinan's 1879 obituary in the New York Clipper newspaper

A scary fielder, even by 19th century standards, Jimmy Hallinan made 67 errors in 50 games as a shortstop in 1876. His career ended when he fell ill in June 1878. He died from inflammation of the bowels the following October at age 30.

The September 1, 1878 edition of the Milwaukee Daily News noted: "Hallinan has been released by the President of the Indianapolis club. He was fined $25 for intoxication one evening recently and the following evening repeated the offense." (Indianapolis had just played a series in Milwaukee.)

Hallinan showed some power as a hitter while playing for six teams in a five-year career. None of his teams played over .500, with the best one being the 1878 Chicago White Stockings, who went 30-30.

There is one other major leaguer named Hallinan, that one being Ed Hallinan. Jimmy was one of four players born in Ireland who played in 1871 in the National Association.

Hallinan started playing team baseball in Chicago in 1870, and played four years with the Aetnas.
