Biographical Information[edit]

Jim Mangan played catcher in the major leagues in 1952, 1954, and 1956 during a pro career that lasted from 1949 to 1958. He went to St. Ignatius College Preparatory, and played baseball at Santa Clara University. He was at Santa Clara at the same time as Lou Berberet, Bill Renna and Wayne Belardi.

He played for the Hollywood Stars in the minors. In 1954 the team tied for the Pacific Coast League championship. Hollywood optioned Mangan to the El Paso Texans in 1955. In July he was named manager, replacing Syd Cohen who had recently been named GM of the team. There was some doubt as to whether the Pittsburgh Pirates would give permission for the move, as a player-manager would become a free agent at the end of the season. He continued as manager until August when he was suspended for "conduct unbecoming a professional baseball player" during a blowout loss in Amarillo. When the team owner fined him $100, Mangan went home to San Francisco and contemplated retiring.

After baseball he taught at Leland High School, and then was a small business owner.

He died in July 2007. Source: obituary.
