Biographical Information[edit]

As a rookie, Jim Hughes was the American League Player of the Month in May of 1975, before a separate "Pitcher of the Month Award" was created. Pitching for the Minnesota Twins, he went 6-0 with 5 complete games and 2 shutouts. He finished the year 16-14, 3.82 and was a third of an inning shy of pitching 250 innings. In a year dominated by the stellar performances of Fred Lynn and Jim Rice with the Boston Red Sox, he did not receive any consideration in the voting for the 1975 American League Rookie of the Year Award and the spot for a right-handed pitcher on the 1975 Topps All-Star Rookie Team went to John Montefusco, who was the Rookie of the Year in the National League.

In 1976, he slipped to 9-14, 4.98, and arm troubles soon ended his career.
