Biographical Information[edit]

Jim Hamilton became the starting shortstop for the Kansas City Monarchs as a rookie in 1946. He succeeded Jackie Robinson, who had broken the color barrier. Hamilton did not have as big a year as Robinson had as a rookie the prior year, hitting only .204. In Game 1 of the 1946 Negro World Series against the Newark Eagles, he broke his leg when former college football player Bob Harvey collided with him while breaking up a double play. Chico Renfroe replaced him at short. Hamilton never would play again.
