Biographical Information[edit]

Jim Gray apparently had a long career in baseball, but the facts are rather sketchy. He played one game in the majors in 1884 for the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, near the end of the season. He had recently turned 22 years of age. He was in the minors in 1887 and 1888. He came back to the majors in 1890 for three games with Pittsburgh teams in two separate major leagues. Finally, he came back to the majors for two games in 1893, again with Pittsburgh. Five years later, he managed at Texarkana.

Most other details about his minor league or amateur career seem lacking, perhaps because he has such a common name. Even a major league team (the Providence Grays) carried his last name. Add to that the complication that two other players with the same last name were active in the majors in 1890 - Charlie Gray and Bill Gray, and both played for Pittsburgh during their major league careers. Even Jim's nickname, "Reddy", appeared commonly in the press because Reddy Mack was a contemporary.
