Biographical Information[edit]
Bill Gray played all over the diamond in his five years in the majors; at least one game at every different position except pitcher. He had 174 games at third base, largely because he was the regular third baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1898; in addition, he had 36 games at second base, 34 at catcher, 24 in the outfield (split rather evenly among the three outfield positions), 16 at shortstop and 3 at first base.
He was one of the youngest players in the league when he played with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1891.
In a nice turn of fate, he spent part of 1892 playing for the Providence Grays of the Eastern League. In an unfortunate one however, he committed suicide by shooting himself and his own gravestone has his death year mislabeled as 1933, even though Gray died in 1932.
