Biographical Information

Jim Canavan was, for a short while, the Gorman Thomas of his time, hitting for a low average but with lots of power. Although his major league career lasted only five years, he was in the top five in the league in home runs twice. In 1892, he batted only .166 for the Chicago Colts, which is the lowest batting average in major league history for a player with at least 400 at bats. His minor league career ran from at least 1887, when he was 20, to 1906, when he was 39. He was also manager of New Haven for six seasons, mostly as a player-manager.
