Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jim Browning was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals 11th overall in the 1970 amateur draft. He spent six seasons in the minors, from 1970 to 1975, never advancing beyond Double-A. On August 30, 1970, he was sent to the Philadelphia Phillies in a deal that originally took place on October 7, 1969. The Cardinals originally sent Curt Flood, Byron Browne, Joe Hoerner and Tim McCarver to the Phillies for Dick Allen, Jerry Johnson and Cookie Rojas. Flood refused to report to his new team, so the Cardinals sent Browning and Willie Montanez (on April 8, 1970) instead. Perhaps his best campaign was 1972, when he went 8-8 with a 3.12 ERA in 25 games (21 starts) for the Reading Phillies. Overall, he was 26-23 with a 3.64 ERA in 93 games (64 starts). In 386 innings, he allowed 400 hits and 173 walks, while striking out 176 batters.
