Biographical Information[edit]

Jesús Ortiz has pitched in the minors and for the Puerto Rican national team.

The Tampa Bay Rays took him in the 24th round of the 2015 amateur draft; the scout was Kevin Elfering. [1] He was 2-2 with a 5.12 ERA for the 2015 GCL Rays. That winter, he allowed five runs (three earned) in 2 2/3 innings for the Gigantes de Carolina in his Puerto Rican League debut. He returned to the GCL Rays and improved to 3-3, 3.48 in '16, walking only 10 in 44 innings. In 2017, he pitched for the GCL Rays (0-1, 3.15 in 8 G) and Princeton Rays (0-1, 9.95 in 4 G). Back with Carolina in 2017-2018, he allowed one run in five innings.

He split 2018 between the Hudson Valley Renegades (3-2, 3.38 in 14 G) and Bowling Green Hot Rods (0 R in 2 IP) to finish his minor league career at 8-9, 3.88. He allowed eight runs in 9 2/3 IP for Carolina in 2018-2019, then was 1-0 with two runs in 2 1/3 IP for 2019-2020 Gigantes. He was on Puerto Rico's roster for the 2020 Americas Olympic Qualifier before that was one of the first baseball events canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [2]

Ortiz was still with Puerto Rico when the event was held, in 2021. He pitched one game, relieving Efraín Nieves in the 6th with a 4-2 deficit, one out and men on the corners. He struck out Julio Rodríguez then walked José Bautista to load the bases. Christian Flecha then took over. [3]
