Biographical Information

Chucho Ramos was a Venezuelan who became the second player from that country in the major leagues, hitting .500 in his ten at-bats with the Cincinnati Reds in 1944. Because of his experience playing in Venezuela, he also became one of the few major league players to come to the majors without any minor league experience.

He spent most of 1944 and 1945 playing for the Syracuse Chiefs.

He played baseball in Venezuela from 1937 to 1956. In the first few years, there was no professional baseball in the country, and he played as an amateur. He was a member of "Los Héroes del 41", the team who won the World Championship in 1941. He hit .389/~.450/..417 with 6 runs and 8 RBI in the event. He was two RBI behind leader Bernardo Cuervo and was 8th in average (between Clemente González and Andrés Fleitas).

From a 1944 issue of the Sporting News: .... "Chucho was quite an athlete in his own county (i.e. Venezuela) - an Olympic sprint champion, a batting champion in the Venezuelan League, and also a high-ranking student of artillery in the Venezuelan Military Academy, which he attended three years and from which he graduated in 1939. Since then he has played ball and worked in a government office .... Competing in the South American Olympic Games at Balboa, Panama, in 1937, Ramos won the 100-meter dash in 10.6 seconds and the 200 meters in 22.0 seconds. Very few men ever ran it faster. He also was a winner of those events in other South American Olympic Games in Cuba ..... Chucho won the Venezuelan League swat title with an average of better than .400 in the winter of 1942."
