Biographical Information[edit]

"Turbidy is the fastest base runner in the country." - Sporting Life's correspondent from Bay City, MI, perhaps getting a little excited in his praise of Turbidy, in the Dec. 5, 1883 issue

Jerry Turbidy was in the majors just in 1884 but played ball elsewhere for many years. He was on the roster for the 1877 Binghamton Cricket, a team with several players who became successful major leaguers. With the 1879 Holyoke team, he was on the roster with a couple future major leaguers, Roger Connor and Mickey Welch.

With the 1884 Kansas City Cowboys, he was age 31 on a team that averaged 24 years of age. Nevertheless, he was a better than average hitter. The team hit .199 with a .253 SLG, while Jerry hit .224 with a .306 SLG. Clarence Cross, who played the most games for the team at shortstop, hit .215 with virtually no extra base hits. Jerry had an .830 fielding percentage at shortstop, but Cross's was lower.
