Biographical Information[edit]

OF Jeren Kendall was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round of the 2017 amateur draft, out of Vanderbilt University. He had earlier been picked by the Boston Red Sox in the 30th round of the 2014 amateur draft when he graduated from high school, after having been the Wisconsin high school player of the year.

Kendall was one of the more intriguing players in the 2017 draft, because on the one hand he was a very athletic prospect with excellent tools, including outstanding power, who had been a starter for one of the top college programs in the country, but on the other he had also struck out in a third of his at-bats, leading some scouts to wonder if he would ever make enough contact in the pro ranks to have any success. As a result, there was wide divergence about where he would go, with some observers putting him just outside the top ten of available players, and others saying he could fall out of the first round altogether. In the end, the Dodgers took him with the 23rd pick.

At Vanderbilt, he hit .281 with 8 homers and 40 RBIs as a freshman in 2015 and hit a walk-off homer against Cal State Fullerton in the 2015 College World Series. As a sophomore in 2016, he hit .333 with 9 homers and 59 RBIs in 62 games, while also stealing 28 bases. He batted .307 in 2017, with 15 homers and 53 runs.

His father, Jeremey Kendall, played in the Philadelphia Phillies system from 1992 to 1996.
