Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Jeremiah Estrada was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 6th round of the 2017 amateur draft from a high school in California. He reached the majors with the Cubs towards the end of the 2022 season, going 0-0, 3.18 in 5 games in relief in fist cup of coffee in the majors. In 2023, he made another 12 appearances with the Cubs, but his ERA went up to 6.75. In the minors, he went 3-2, 1.30 with 9 saves in 34 games spread along three levels to earn his first call-up in 2022, but fell to 1-1, 5.97 in 26 games for the AAA Iowa Cubs in 2023 as he struggled with his control. He missed the 2018 minor league season because of an injury, and 2020 because the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the minor leagues.
Following his disappointing 2023 season, the Cubs placed him on waivers on November 6th, and he was claimed by the San Diego Padres. He was with the Padres during their two-game season-opening series against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Seoul, South Korea and pitched a scoreless inning in relief, even if he gave up a hit and two walks, in the first of these games on March 20, 2024. He was then sent to the AAA El Paso Chihuahuas, where he went 0-0, 2.08 with 3 saves in 8 games, with 20 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings. That prompted a return to San Diego on April 26th, after which he began to pitch lights out. He gave up just 1 run in his first 12 games for the Padres, for an ERA of 0.55, while notching two wins and one save. On May 23rd, in a two-inning relief stint against the Cincinnati Reds, he retired the last five batters he faced in order while recording his first win in the majors, then in his next outing, on May 26th facing the New York Yankees, he struck out all five batters he saved in 1 2/3 innings to receive credit for a second win. On May 28th, he pitched a perfect 9th inning in a 4-0 win over the Miami Marlins and was unhittable once again, striking out Jesús Sánchez, Jake Burger and Nick Gordon to end the game. That gave him 13 consecutive K's over a three-game span, something never before seen in baseball history. The known record was 11 by José Alvarado in 2023, although full details are lacking for performances pre-dating 1961.
