Biographical Information[edit]
The son of big leaguer Herm Wehmeier, pitcher Jeff Wehmeier was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the 1971 amateur draft. The 15th overall pick, he was taken right after Jim Rice and right before Sugar Bear Daniels. He played three seasons in the Cubs organization. With the '71 Caldwell Cubs, he went 2-5 with a 5.09 ERA while walking 61 in 46 innings. The wild righty tied Frank Riccelli for the Pioneer League lead in walks (Riccelli pitched 42 more innings), was 4th in wild pitches (11) and tied for 9th in losses.
In 1972, Wehmeier was with the GCL Cubs (6-0, 1.89) and Quincy Cubs (0-3, 6.11). He ended his career with Quincy in '73, going 1-7 with a 6.60 ERA and 44 BB in 60 IP.
Overall, Jeff had a 9-15, 5.08 record in 39 minor league games (37 starts), walking 144 and allowing 169 hits in 172 IP for a 1.82 WHIP.
