Biographical Information

Jeff Jones was a Harvard graduate, playing first base for the Crimson varsity. In 1920, he was briefly the property of the Philadelphia Athletics, but never played in a big-league game. (See Movius, Geoffrey H., editor. The Second Book of Harvard Athletics, 1923-1963. Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard Varsity Club, 1964: 549.) He played for some time in the minor leagues.

After receiving his masters degree at Harvard (he also studied at the University of Michigan), Jones became a successful high school coach in Massachusetts. He taught at Sagamore School and Falmouth High School, as well as Newton High School, where he coached football and basketball as well as baseball.

In 1947, he became the chief New England scout for the Boston Braves (for whom he had been scouting part-time since 1941). In 1952, Jones signed future Red Sox manager Joe Morgan and Mike Roarke out of Boston College. He scouted for the Braves through 1965, then moved to the St. Louis Cardinals (1965-1972) and Oakland A's (1973-1974.

Jones passed away at the age of 95 on December 9, 1992.
