Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jay Stephens played in the minor leagues from 2003 to 2011. Over his first six seasons, he played just a single game above High A, though he eventually peaked at Triple-A in 2009.

He was taken in the 6th round of the 2003 amateur draft, one pick after pitcher Billy Sadler and a few after future star outfielder Matt Kemp. After a rough initial showing, he went 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA in 14 games (9 starts) in 2004, then 4-1 with a 2.82 mark in 18 games (10 starts) for the Staten Island Yankees in 2005. He went 4-1, 1.80 in 8 games (6 starts) for the Charleston RiverDogs in 2006 and in 2007, he went 4-1, 1.70 in 11 games (9 starts) between two clubs. His ERA rose to 3.65 as he averaged 11 H/9 IP in 2008, though he was a South Atlantic League Mid-Season All-Star that year. He reached Triple-A for the only time in 2009, tossing 6 2/3 innings (5.40 ERA) for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees; he was 6-5, 3.88 overall. He joined the Philadelphia Phillies system in 2010, tossing 13 1/3 scoreless innings in relief for the Reading Phillies, but slipped to a 10.80 mark in 3 1/3 frames in 2011 to finish his career.

Overall, Stephens went 27-23 with a 3.16 ERA in 127 games (71 starts). In 466 2/3 innings, he allowed 481 hits and 124 walks (1.296 WHIP, while striking out 376 batters.
