Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Jay Allen was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds with the 30th overall pick of the 2021 amateur draft; he was the only player taken with a compensation pick immediately following the first round proper, as compensation for the signing of Trevor Bauer as a free agent by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is also sometimes called Jay Allen II.

Coming straight out of high school, Allen began his pro career in 2021 in the Arizona Complex League with the ACL Reds, hitting .328 in 19 games. In 2022, , he split his season between the Daytona Tortugas of the Florida State League and the Dayton Dragons of the Midwest League, for a total of 91 games. His slash line was .225/.347/.324 with 3 homers and 29 RBIs. In 2023, a left thumb sprain limited him to just 31 games between Dayton and the ACL Reds, the latter on a rehabilitation assignment. He struggled even more badly with Dayton, batting .154 in 25 games, and slugging an anemic .220, although the injury was likely the main cause of his struggles.
