Biographical Information

Jason Tyner was a key performer from the leadoff spot for Team USA in the 1997 Intercontinental Cup, hitting .439/.500/.512 with 9 runs and 8 RBI in 9 games. He was 2 for 5 with a double, walk, steal and 2 runs in their Bronze Medal game loss to the Australian national team. Tyner tied Brian Oliver and Luis Ulacia for the tourney lead in steals (3), led the event in hits (18) and was third in average behind Paul Gonzalez and Greg Jelks. Tyner was left off the All-Tournament team as Jelks was picked at DH. A big star in college at Texas A&M University, he was selected 21st overall in the 1st round of the 1998 amateur draft by the New York Mets.

Although not known as a run producer, he became the first player in Mets history to drive in a run in first three major league games when he made his debut with the team in June of 2000; he would remain the sole Mets player to do so until matched by Michael Conforto in 2015. In fact, his lack of power was the stuff of legend: he did not hit a professional home run until 2003 - his fifth season - and only hit 3 in 898 games over 11 seasons; in the majors, he hit one long ball, for the Minnesota Twins in 2007, while playing 440 games over 8 seasons. The homer came on July 28th off Jake Westbrook of the Cleveland Indians, just inside the right field foul pole at Jacobs Field.
