Biographical Information[edit]

After failing to earn a walk-on spot at USC, Jason Thompson enrolled at Saddleback College. He was drafted from the University of Arizona in the 9th round of the 1993 amateur draft by the San Diego Padres. Thompson struggled in the field committing 12 errors in 1993 with the Class A Spokane Indians, and 19 errors between the High A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and Double A Wichita Wranglers. Thompson did however show promise with the bat, hitting 21 home runs in 1994 driving in 109 runs. He spent the 1995 season with the Double A Memphis Chicks hitting 20 home runs and driving in 64 RBIs.

Thompson started the 1996 season in Triple-A with the Las Vegas Stars but made his major league debut on June 9th against the Pittsburgh Pirates. A tough day was June 22nd against the Chicago Cubs, when he went 0-7 at the plate, committing two errors, the second of which would cost the Padres the game in the 16th inning. Following the game he was demoted to Las Vegas and never played in the majors again.

In 1997, Thompson played in Japan for the Chiba Lotte Marines. He returned to the Las Vegas Stars in 1998 for his final year.

He is not to be confused with the other Jason Thompson, who was also a power-hitting first baseman, but who had a much longer major league career in the 1970s and 1980s.
