Biographical Information[edit]

Jason Standridge joined the Softbank Hawks in 2007. He made his Japanese debut on June 23rd in relief of Toshiya Sugiuchi with a 4-0 deficit and walked two of the four batters he faced, but got the victory when the Hawks rallied for six runs the next inning.

He had a long career in Nippon Pro Baseball, stretching from 2007 to 2017. In addition to the Softbank Hawks, he played for the Hanshin Tigers and Chiba Lotte Marines. He returned to the US in 2009 after mainly pitching in the Japanese minor leagues in 2008, but was lured back to Japan by Hanshin. He went 11-5 in 2010 and 9-7 in 2011 in his first two seasons with the Tigers. He had a couple more seasons during which he finished in double digits for wins, both with the Hawks, in 2014 (11-8) and 2015 (10-7). Overall, he posted 75 wins over ten seasons in NPB, with an ERA of 3.31.

He was a two-sport star in high school and was recruited as a quarterback to attend Auburn University. However, he turned down the offer in order to play baseball after being drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays with the 31st pick of the 1997 amateur draft. He was the final player selected in the first round proper. The Devil Rays and their comrades from the expansion of 1998, the Arizona Diamondbacks, would not start playing in the majors until the following year, but were allowed to form lower-level minor league teams prior to that, and to participate in the 1997 draft. He was assigned to GCL Devil Rays after signing with Tampa and reached the majors in 2001.
