Norton was 4-3 with a 3.81 ERA as a college freshman, then 12-3 with a 3.49 ERA in 1996. He led the Sun Belt Conference in wins and made All-Conference. He tied for 7th in NCAA Division I in victories, even with J.D. Arteaga, Seth Greisinger, Jeff Weaver, Jeff Williams and Seth Etherton among others. In '97, the right-hander fell to 9-6, 4.29. He struck out 132, 15th in Division I. As a senior, Norton had a 9-3, 4.53 record and was All-Conference for the second time. He set a school record for career wins.

The Boston Red Sox chose Norton in the 16th round of the 1998 amateur draft, the third among six straight college pitchers they took that year. He was 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in three outings for the GCL Red Sox, 1-1 with a 4.62 ERA in six for the Lowell Spinners and 3-1 with a 1.93 ERA for the Michigan Battle Cats.

In 1999, Norton was 9-6 with a 2.32 ERA for the Augusta GreenJackets. He struck out 150 and walked only 28 in 136 innings, with a .99 WHIP. He was 4th in the South Atlantic League in ERA, after Jason Standridge, Edwin Gonzalez and Brad Baisley. He tied Travis Hughes for 5th in strikeouts. He led Red Sox farmhands in Ks.

In his third season, Jason was with the Sarasota Red Sox (7-7, Sv, 3.86) and the Trenton Thunder (1-0, 0 R in 7 IP). He struggled with Trenton in 2001 (0-2, 12.12) to end his career.
