The son of big leaguer Gary Roenicke, outfielder Jarett Roenicke was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 31st round of the 1999 amateur draft. He did not sign and was taken by the Padres again in the 2000 amateur draft, this time in the 17th round. He made his pro debut that summer with the AZL Padres and hit .269/.357/.339. He alternated between the outfield and first base. He split 2001 between the Idaho Falls Padres (.286/.326/.310 in 24 G) and Eugene Emeralds (4 for 25, 1 BB, 10 K). After not playing in 2002, he was with the Shreveport Sports of the independent Central Baseball League and batted .252/.304/.326 as a regular in the outfield.

In addition to his father, his uncle Ron Roenicke and his brother Josh Roenicke played in the majors. Another brother, Jason Roenicke and a cousin, Lance Roenicke, played in the minors as well.
