Jan Toman broke into the Czech Extraliga in 2002 with MZLU Express Brno, hitting .281/.354/.386 in 15 games. Toman moved to Draci Brno in 2003 and batted .310/.455/.321 with 21 walks and 26 runs in 27 games; he stole 19 bases in 23 tries. He tied Martin Veselý for 6th in the Extraliga in walks, was 7th in OBP and led in steals.

Toman fell to .260/.407/.301 in 2004. The speedster was 18-for-20 in steal attempts and he scored 22 runs in 27 games. He had 20 walks. He tied Petr Baroch and Aleš Navrátil for third in the circuit in walks and tied for second in steals.

In 2005, the 21-year-old hit .250/.331/.293 for Draci Brno and stole in all nine of his tries. He tied for 8th in the league in stolen bases. Despite coming off his worst season yet in terms of OPS, he made the Czech national team for the first time. He hit .188/.278/.188 in the 2005 Baseball World Cup and made two errors in 16 chances in left field.

Jan finished among the 2006 leaders in walks (17, tied for 7th), runs (28, 4th) and steals (9, 8th). He was a backup outfielder for the Czech Republic in the 2007 European Championship, going 0 for 3 with two strikeouts. An occasional pinch-runner, he stole a base and scored a run.

In 2008, Toman hit .323/.421/.354 for Draci Brno and stole 15 bases in 16 tries, tying Martin Schneider for fourth in the league in swipes. He hit .200/.273/.200 in the 2008 European Cup and was caught stealing in his lone try. In the 2008 World University Championship, he hit only .111/.238/.111 yet scored 5 runs in 7 games. He tied for second in steals with four, one behind Japan's Keijiro Matsumoto.
