Biographical Information[edit]
Jake Munch played 22 games for the Philadelphia Athletics under manager Connie Mack in 1918. Although he occasionally appeared in the field, the large majority of his appearances were as a pinch-hitter. Jake had hit .330 with 11 triples for the Atlanta Crackers, which may have drawn the attention of the Athletics.
"A story printed in one of the local papers under an Atlanta date line claims that the Old Fox was attempting to purchase the services of Jake Munch, the Crackers' first sacker, but this wild fired rumor was denied by the Old Fox today. Munch was the leading hitter in the Southern League last season and the release figure quoted on him is far beyond any price that the major league clubs at present desire to take on minor league stars." - The Washington Herald, April 8, 1918, about six weeks before Munch made his major league debut
