Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jacob Latz was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 5th round of the 2017 amateur draft out of Kent State University, although he never pitched for them: he had started his college career with Louisiana State University, before transferring to Kent State, where he had been redshirted for the 2017 season as per NCAA regulations. He had been considered a serious prospect before college, having been drafted in the 11th round by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2014 amateur draft, but chose to attend LSU. He was the Illinois high school player of the year in 2014, but did not play as a freshman on a strong LSU squad, and only made 7 appearances as a junior, prompting his decision to transfer.

He made his major league debut for the Rangers as an emergency starter against the Cleveland Indians on August 25, 2021. That day's scheduled starter, Dane Dunning, had to go on the COVID-19 list, prompting the Rangers to call up Jake from the AAA Round Rock Express. He had been a combined 1-1, 4.98 in 17 games (15 starts) between AA and AAA before the call-up.
