Biographical Information[edit]

Jake Gilbert has pitched in the minors and for the German national team. He comes from an athletic family. His grandfather Don Monson and uncle Dan Monson have been college basketball coaches and his uncle Gale Gilbert and cousin Garrett Gilbert played in the NFL. [1]

He played baseball, basketball and football in high school. [2] He allowed eight runs in five innings as a college freshman, then was 1-2 with a 9.55 ERA as a sophomore. He improved to 3-2, 4.91 with a save as a junior and 6-3, 2.55 with a save as a senior. He tied for fourth in the Mountain West Conference in wins.

Undrafted, he was signed by Cincinnati Reds scouts Dan Cholowsky and Charlie Aliano. [3] He split the summer between the AZL Reds (1-1, 5 R, 2 ER, 13 K in 8 IP) and Greeneville Reds (0-3, Sv, 6.18 in 8 G, 37 K in 27 2/3 IP). The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021, he played for the ACL Reds (4-1, Sv, 1.33) and Dayton Dragons (4-1, 2 Sv, 5.83 in 20 G). He fanned 67 in 49 2/3 IP overall. On August 5, he finished up a combined no-hitter began by ACL teammates Yomil Maysonet, Damian Henderson and Tyler Garbee against the ACL Rockies. [4] He tied for fifth in the Reds system in victories.

Gilbert was 5-3 with a 5.77 ERA in 30 relief appearances for Dayton in 2022, walking 35 and striking out 59 in 53 innings. The tall right-hander was on Germany's roster for the 2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers as he had been born in Germany, but he did not make it into a game. [5]
