Pitcher Jake Dunning made the majors in 2013.
He hit .326 as a college freshman and went 2-1 with a 2.63 ERA. As a starter at short in 2008, the sophomore improved to .341 and stole 17 bases in 20 tries. He played for the Alaska Goldpanners of the Alaska Baseball League that summer. Transferring to Indiana, he hit .308/.355/.452 with 45 RBI in 58 games, continuing to play short primarily. He was 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA in limited action on the hill. He was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 33rd round of the 2009 amateur draft (the scout was Kevin Christman). As a backup SS-3B for the 2009 AZL Giants, he batted .227/.244/.307. The Giants turned him into a pitcher after that year, a move that paid off.
With the 2010 Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, Dunning was 1-0 with two saves and a 2.95 ERA, striking out 46 while walking 8 in 36 2/3 IP. He went 6-3 with 10 saves and a 4.74 ERA for the San Jose Giants in 2011. The next year, he had a 5-2, 4.10 record for the Richmond Flying Squirrels. His 44 games pitched tied Robbie Weinhardt for 8th in the Eastern League. He opened 2013 with the Fresno Grizzlies and was at 1-2, 1.75 after 23 games. He was called up when the Giants cut ties with Ramon Ramirez.
He made his big league debut finishing up a 3-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves on June 16, 2013. He got B.J. Upton on a grounder and Brian McCann on a fly. Chris Johnson doubled and Dunning threw a wild pitch but he recovered to get Ramiro Pena on a fly out.
His brother Dane Dunning was a supplemental 1st rund pick in the 2016 amateur draft.
