Biographical Information

Outfielder Jake Crawford signed with the St. Louis Browns in 1950 to begin his baseball odyssey. He was assigned to the Muskogee Reds of the Class C Western Association and batted .263 (125-for-475) with 20 home runs. Jake had even a better year in 1951, with 143 hits and 23 bombs in hitting .302. In 1952, while with the Scranton Miners of the Class A Eastern League, he batted .288 with 27 homers. In his lone big league stint as a September call up, he was 2-for-11 (.182), stroking a single against Marv Grissom of the Chicago White Sox for his first hit on September 27. Crawford spent the next five seasons (1953-1957) in the high minors, in five different leagues with five different teams, and ended his career with the Fort Worth Cats of the AA Texas League in 1957. Jake spent a total of eight years in pro ball, playing 1,000 games in the minors by hitting .265 (912-for-3,431) with 136 home runs. After baseball, he spent 23 years as a patrolman for the Fort Worth, TX police department. He died at his home in Fort Worth on October 21, 2008 at 80.
