Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Jake Brentz was drafted in the 11th round of the 2013 amateur draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays signed him with a $700,000 bonus, the third largest bonus ever for a player drafted after the 10th round. One of his teammates on the GCL Blue Jays in 2013, Rowdy Tellez, received the largest ever such bonus.
He began his professional career with the GCL Blue Jays in 2013, but gave up 9 runs and 12 walks in 7 2/3 innings for a 10.57 ERA. Back with the same team in 2014, he did better, with a record of 1-3, 4.08 in 12 games, including 6 starts. he pitched 39 2/3 innings, and while he did walk 26 batters, he also struck out 34. In 2015, he was with the Bluefield Blue Jays of the Appalachian League where he was 0-1, 4.06 in 6 starts when he was one of three prospects traded to the Seattle Mariners on July 31st in return for veteran reliever Mark Lowe; joining him were Rob Rasmussen and Nick Wells.
Still, it took him until 2021 to make his major league debut, by which time he was a member of the Kansas City Royals.
