Biographical Information[edit]

Jaime Fabela played 1,313 games in the Mexican League and later managed a pennant-winner. His playing career was relatively nondescript, save for a starring turn in 1965.

Jaime debuted in 1960, hitting .271 for the Celaya Cajeteros of the Mexican Center League. He split 1961 between Celaya and the Guanjuato Tuzos, batting .328 with 23 homers and 113 RBI. He was 6th in average and second to Jorge Calvo in both home runs and RBI. That earned him a promotion to the Mexican League in 1962 and he would play the next 13 seasons there.

In 1962, Fabela was 0 for 4 for the Veracruz Eagle. He improved to .281/.352/.406 in 1963 then fell to .247/.351/.298 in 1964. In '65, he joined the Jalisco Charros and put together his big year, at .357/.415/.497 with 30 doubles, 9 triples and 86 runs. He stole just 6 bases in 21 tries, one negative. He was 4th in the league in average and led with 109 RBI, 3 ahead of runner-up Bobby Prescott and 13 over #3 Ellie Hendricks.

Fabela's second season with Jalisco was a shadow of the first, at .237/.319/.296. He played for the Monterrey Sultans in 1967 (.277/.340/.363) and 1968 (.206/.281/.261) then was with the Poza Rica Oilers for four years. His batting lines were .228/.273/.298 in 1969, .268/.316/.304 in 1970, .286/.321/.344 in 1971 and .218/.284/.259 in 1972. He wrapped up with the Indios de Ciudad Juarez, producing at a .279/.323/.315 rate in 1973 and .266/.313/.319 in 1974.

In 1978, he guided the Rieleros de Aguascalientes to their only Mexican League pennant. He managed the Mexican national team to 7th place in the 1993 Intercontinental Cup.
