Biographical Information

Jae-woong Shin pitched for the South Korean national team and in the Korea Baseball Organization.

He was a teammate of Chan-ho Park from elementary school through high school. He was 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA and 40 K in 26 innings in the 1993 Intercontinental Cup, leading the tournament in strikeouts, 10 ahead of teammate Young-pil Choi, the runner-up. He fanned 16 against Team USA, which had several future major leaguers. No one else struck out more batters in a single Intercontinental Cup from 1991 through 2010, when the event ended; records prior to 1991 are unavailable.

Shin was the first-round pick of the Hanwha Eagles in the 1995 KBO draft. He was 3-5 with a 5.09 ERA as a rookie in 1995 and 5-3, 5.10 with two saves in 1996. 1997 was his best season at 6-7, 3.67 with two shutouts. He fell to 5-11, 5.90 in 1998, tying for 6th in the league in losses.

His woes continued in 1999 (0-2, 10.05 ERA, 2.93 WHIP in 9 G), 2000 (3-7, 7.20) and 2001 (2-2, 9.17 in 9 G) before allowing two hits and a walk in a span four batters in his final season. He was 24-37 with two saves and a 5.44 ERA in 133 games as a pro, never living up to his promise.
