Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher J.P. Massey was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 7th round of the 2022 amateur draft, out of the University of Minnesota. He had had mixed results in college, with a combined record of 3-14 over 4 years, with ERAs of 10.80 and 6.52 his final two seasons.
He began his professional career in 2023 with the Bradenton Marauders of the Florida State League, going 3-3, 3.28 in 11 games, then was promoted to the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the South Atlantic League where he was 2-4, 4.65 in 9 games. In spite of his lack of pro experience, he was named to the National League squad in the 2023 Futures Game, after being named the FSL Pitcher of the Month in May. Overall, he finished the year at 5-7, 3.81, with 60 hits allowed and 83 strikeouts (against 47 walks) in 80 1/3 innings.
