Biographical Information[edit]

Israel Alcántara played parts of three big league seasons. He is best known for an incident in 2001, when, batting for the Triple A Pawtucket Red Sox, he karate kicked Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons catcher Jeremy Salazar after pitcher Blas Cedeno buzzed him with a pitch. He proceeded to rush the mound, but was tackled by infielder Kevin Orie before getting too far. The International League suspended Alcantara a mere seven games for his conduct.

Despite hitting only 6 home runs in the majors, Alcántara blasted 287 in a 15-year minor league career, with as many as 36 in a season. As a big leaguer, he primarily wore number 55. After his career in the States ended, Alcantara spent five years playing in other countries including Taiwan and Colombia.

The Miami Marlins hired Alcántara as a coach for the Jupiter Hammerheads in 2015. The next year he moved to the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. Izzy was the hitting coach for the DSL Diamondbacks 2 in 2016-2018, and DSL Diamondbacks 1 in 2019 and 2021. He became a manager with the DSL Diamondbacks Black in 2022-2023 and DSL Diamondbacks Red in 2024.

In addition to coaching & managing minor leaguers, Alcantara has coaching experience in the Dominican League. He was a coach for the Tigres del Licey during the 2009/2010 season. In later years he worked for the Leones del Escogido club as an assistant hitting coach.
