Institute for Colored Youth
The Institute for Colored Youth was founded in 1837 in Philadelphia, PA as the city's first high school for African-American students, also providing college-level courses. In 1902, it became a post-secondary institution as Cheyney University, the country's first Historically Black College or University. Octavius Catto studied and taught here.
