Biographical Information[edit]
Hyung-jun Kim has played in the Korea Baseball Organization and for the South Korean national team.
He was a second-round pick of the NC Dinos in the 2018 KBO draft. [1] He hit .161/.236/.173 with 32 strikeouts in 89 plate appearances in the 2018 KBO; he was their most-used catcher still, with 60 games and 254 2/3 innings, presumably being pinch-hit for regularly. He threw out 32% of those who tried to steal. He batted .224/.278/.327 in 2019, fielding .996 and throwing out 40%; NC had picked up Eui-ji Yang as a major free agent signing, installing him behind the dish. He produced at a .306/.390/.444 clip in 82 plate appearances in 2020. He was on the Dinos' roster for the 2020 Korean Series but did not play while Yang won the MVP.
Kim then joined the Sangmu Phoenix military baseball team to fulfill his military service. [2] In the 2022 Asian Games, he scored their last run of a 2-0 win over Taiwan in the Gold Medal Game. He hit .167/.211/.167 in the Games with three runs in five games, handling 52 chances error-free and allowing two steals in two tries. He tied Mong Lee for 3rd in the Games in putouts (47) and had the most chances of anyone who did not make an error. [3]
After batting .236/.321/.514 with 6 homers in 72 AB for the 2023 Dinos, he helped South Korea win the 2023 Asia Professional Baseball Championship. [4] He took over the starting catching job for the Dinos again in 2024.
