Biographical Information[edit]

The Florida Marlins drafted Hunter Mense in the 17th round of the 2006 Amateur Draft from the University of Missouri. He played in their minor league system from 2006-2010, reaching AAA briefly in 2010. In these five seasons he hit .254/.321/.362 overall while appearing in 349 games. Defensively, Mense played mostly first base and the corner outfield positions. The Marlins released him during the 2010 season and he finished the year playing for the Kansas City T-Bones of the independent Northern League. After a year away from professional baseball Mense returned to the T-Bones for one final season in 2012.

Even before completing his playing career, Mense began working on his coaching career. He returned to Missouri to complete his undergraduate degree and served as a Tigers' undergraduate assistant coach. Mense continued on to graduate school and earned a degree in counseling psychology while working as a graduate assistant coach. These endeavors occupied the 2011-2014 college baseball seasons. In addition to coaching, Mense worked as a color analyst for the Tigers' broadcast team in 2011-2013. After completing his education, the Tigers hired Mense as a full-time assistant coach in charge of hitters for the 2015-2016 seasons.

Mense returned to professional ball in 2017 as the hitting coach for the Tri-City Dust Devils. He only stayed with the San Diego Padres organization for one year before being hired by the Toronto Blue Jays. Mense worked as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats hitting coach in 2018 before being promoted to minor league hitting coordinator in 2019. Mense received his first major league coaching assignment in 2022 when he was named assistant hitting coach for the Blue Jays while still retaining the minor league hitting coordinator responsibilities. In 2023 it appears he focused solely upon his assistant hitting coach responsibilities.
