Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Hunter Bigge was drafted by the Chicago Cubs out of Harvard University in the 12th round of the 2019 amateur draft. He was a two-way player in college, playing as the team's designated hitter when not pitching. He had some success in that role, batting .273 in 42 games in 2018 and .313 in 41 games in 2019. He also played some third base in college, and was a first baseman in the Northwoods League, a summer collegiate league, in the summer of 2018.
As a pitcher, he was a starter in college but was used exclusively in relief during his minor league apprenticeship. He went 7-2, 5.26 with 10 saves in 41 games between Class A and AA in 2022, then reached AAA for the first time in 2023 when he went 3-1, 4.50 with 2 saves between the Tennessee Smokies and Iowa Cubs. In 2024, he started the season with Iowa, but made rehabilitations stints in the Florida Complex League and Midwest League after a May injury. In 11 games for Iowa, he was at 1-0, 0,77 with 6 games when he was called up to Chicago on July 7th. He made his major league debut on July 9th, pitching a perfect 9th inning in finishing up a 9-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles. His first strikeout victim was Ryan O'Hearn. In 4 games with the Cubs, he had no decisions and posted an ERA of 2.70 in 3 1/3 innings. On July 28th, he was included in a deal with the Tampa Bay Rays that landed the Cubs third baseman Isaac Paredes. Joining him in heading to Tampa were Christopher Morel, who had been the Cubs' starter at third base during the first half, and Ty Johnson.
