Biographical Information[edit]

Hugh Evans played for the Salem Rebels in the San Francisco Giants system in 1963, hitting .288/.433/.485 with 6 home runs, 25 RBI, 47 runs scored and 39 walks in 48 games. He later became a well-regarded referee in the National Basketball Association, rising to the position of league supervisor of officials, and was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.

Evans was a two-sport star in college, and twice named all-CIAA in basketball. In a basketball game in 1962 he was run under by another player and knocked to the floor, requiring 14 stitches to the back of his head. Then in early August 1963, he blacked out during a Rebels' game. [1]. There was no immediate connection between the two incidents.

Away from the game of basketball, he served as the director of Mitchel Houses community center in Bronx, NY, where he oversaw the center's athletic programming.
