Hongbo Zhang has been a member of the Chinese national team for seven years (2002-2008).
In the 2003 China Baseball League, Zhang finished 5th with a .318 average for Guangdong. Zhang played for China in the 2003 Asian Championship and 2005 Asian Championship (their first medal in an Asian Championship, a Bronze) as well as the 2005 Konami Cup. In the 2005 Baseball World Cup, he hit .107/.235/.143 while playing all three outfield spots. In the 2006 World Baseball Classic, Zhang went 1 for 10 with a walk. He played for China in the 2006 Asian Games. In the 2006 Haarlem Baseball Week, he batted .222/.263/.278. He was with China in both the 2006 and 2007 Konami Cups. His batting line in the 2007 Arizona Fall League was .167/.211/.222. Zhang went just 1 for 17 with 8 strikeouts in China's last-place finish in the 2008 Olympics; he was their starting left fielder.
