Biographical Information[edit]

Henry Yap was a middle infielder for the British national team. In the 1999 European Championship, he was 2 for 21 as their starting shortstop, only getting hits against Croatia and Slovenia. In the 2001 European Championship, the 21-year-old hit .458/.567/.583 with 6 walks, 6 runs and 3 doubles in 7 games, including a 3-hit game against Silver Medal-winning Russia. He was second in the tournament in average (behind former minor leaguer David Sheldon), 7th in OBP (between David Zabalza and Randy Giorgiadis), tied for first in hits (11, even with Jose Arza, Jurjan Koenen, David Sheldon, Tomas Ovesny, Javier Zabalza and Klaus Hopfensperger) and tied for first with 3 times caught stealing (even with Giorgiadis). He lost All-Star honors at 2B to Alexander Nizov, a former minor leaguer. He fared worse in the 2003 European Championship, going 1 for 14 with two steals. One positive was a bases-loaded walk he drew that sent in the winning run against Belgium.
