Biographical Information

Harry Deane played for and managed the Fort Wayne Kekiongas for part of the 1871 season, and later played for the Baltimore Canaries in 1874. He had previously been a backup player in the outfield for the 1870 Cincinnati Red Stockings, before the creation of the National Association, and since that was a famous team, he had likely played amateur ball before that.

Deane was one of the oldest players on the Kekiongas at age 25, and became the manager after dissatisfaction grew with the first manager Bill Lennon. Although the Canaries were an older team, he was also one of the oldest players on that team, but nevertheless had a batting average slightly higher than the team average.

He umpired a total of 7 games, starting with one in the National Association in 1871. In the National League, he worked 2 games each in 1876 and 1878.

Deane died in May 1925, the same month that Yogi Berra was born. John Ward and Christy Mathewson also died in 1925.
