Biographical Information

Hank Edwards entered the Army in October 1943 and was discharged in March 1946. He might have lost his best seasons to the war, since with Cleveland Indians in 1943 he was an up-and-coming 24-year-old who posted a 125 Adjusted OPS, and then in 1946 on returning from the war he had a 147 Adjusted OPS, finishing in the top ten in both batting and slugging.

Later, as a back-up with the Chicago Cubs in 1950, he also had a very good year, hitting .364 and slugging .536.

He finished out his career playing for the St. Louis Browns in 1953, in their last season in St. Louis.

A biography of Edwards says that he had to quit high school after ninth grade to help support his family when his father was in bad health. He worked for a canning factory. He began playing professional baseball in 1939, and won the Triple Crown in 1941 in the Three-I League. A number of injuries, the worst in 1948, turned him from a regular into a back-up.
